A message to behavioral health professionals this Mental Health Awareness Month

May 13, 2026

Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and empower individuals to seek care. It is also an opportunity to recognize you and the work you do every day. Behavioral health professionals make a meaningful difference, often during moments of great vulnerability.

Each day, you play a vital role in supporting individuals as they manage their mental health challenges. Whether assisting in crisis or supporting ongoing recovery, your clinical skill and care make a significant impact. Your thoughtful approach to this work shapes outcomes that matter deeply to the people for whom you care.

Behavioral health professionals are the foundation of mental health care, delivering compassionate, high‑quality services in an environment marked by rising demand, workforce shortages, and increasing clinical complexity. Your commitment, clinical expertise, and compassion are at the heart of improving access to high-quality behavioral health care and reducing stigma for those seeking support. Your work helps reduce suffering, improve functioning, and support overall health and well‑being.

At its core, behavioral health care is grounded in human connection. While tools, systems, and technologies continue to evolve, the therapeutic relationship remains central. The trust you build, your attentive listening, and the clinical judgment you exercise in partnership with those for whom you provide care are fundamental to clinical progress.

This moment is an opportunity to not only elevate awareness but also to honor you, the individuals who sustain this work. I want to acknowledge the critical work you do every day to support individuals, families, and communities.

Thank you for the commitment you have to this field and for the care you provide.

With appreciation,

Elizabeth Hoover, M.D.
