New option for administering long-acting injectable antipsychotics: Albertsons Specialty Care

May 21, 2026

Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medications can be highly beneficial to patients living with severe mental health conditions. When you identify a patient who may benefit from an LAI antipsychotic, Evernorth® Behavioral Health (Evernorth) is committed to making access to that medication as easy as possible.

If you are unable to administer a LAI antipsychotic in your office, Albertsons® Specialty Care can help. Their pharmacies administer LAI antipsychotics, as well as provide care coordination to support appointment scheduling and ongoing adherence.

How to refer your patient

You can refer eligible patients to an Albertsons pharmacy for LAI antipsychotic administration in just a few steps:

  1. Send the prescription to the patient’s local Albertsons pharmacy.
    • Depending on your location, Albertsons pharmacies may also operate under the following names: Tom Thumb, Sav‑On, Randalls, United, Amigos, or Market Street.
  2. Include the direction “for pharmacist to administer” in the prescription notes or signature.
  3. Add a requested administration date, if applicable.

Once the prescription is received:

  • The pharmacy forwards the referral to an Albertsons Specialty Care coordinator.
  • The coordinator contacts the patient, confirms benefits, and schedules the visit.

What your patients can expect

Patients referred to Albertsons Specialty Care can expect a streamlined, supportive experience:

  • A welcome call within two business days to schedule their appointment.
  • Brief paperwork completed on the day of the appointment.
  • Medication counseling from trained staff.
  • Injection administration in a private consultation room.
  • Scheduling of their next dose before leaving.
  • Reminder outreach approximately three days prior to their next visit.

Albertsons Specialty Care will also notify you if your patient does not respond to outreach or misses their scheduled appointment, allowing you to remain informed and determine next steps as clinically appropriate

Supporting continuity of care

This collaboration helps ensure patients have access to LAI treatment and the support needed to stay on track with their care plans. By offering an alternate site of administration, Albertsons Specialty Care can help reduce barriers and support medication adherence.
