October 13, 2025
October is Health Literacy Month and it’s a great time to highlight the importance of the flu vaccine, a vital tool in protecting our communities during flu season. You play a key role in helping patients navigate health information and services, which may contribute to better overall health outcomes.
The flu vaccine is an essential component of public health strategy, particularly during the fall and winter months, when the flu virus is most active. Vaccination can prevent illness, reduce the severity of symptoms, and decrease the risk of complications, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions.1
Effective communication strategies
Following are strategies to help patients make informed decisions about the flu vaccine:
Use plain language to explain the benefits and potential side effects of the flu vaccine. Avoid medical jargon and provide clear explanations for terms that may be unfamiliar.
Utilize brochures, posters, and infographics that offer visual representations of how vaccines work and their benefits. Ensure that materials are available in multiple languages to cater to diverse patient populations.
Host informational sessions or webinars where patients can ask questions and express concerns. Provide opportunities for dialogue to dispel myths and clarify misconceptions about the flu vaccine.
Listen to patients’ concerns with empathy and provide reassurance based on scientific evidence. Share personal stories or experiences to build trust and relate to your patients on a human level.
