As your patient population becomes increasingly diverse, delivering personalized care requires thoughtful consideration, adaptability, and flexibility. Culturally responsive care goes beyond addressing specific health needs associated with race and ethnicity ‒ it also involves understanding the unique factors that impact each patient’s experience within the health care system.
To help bridge cultural differences, support personalized care, and drive better health outcomes, Cigna Healthcare® offers your practice a variety of resources designed for both you and your patients.

Patients are becoming increasingly diverse U.S. population diversity projections According to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study, by 2044 more than half of all Americans are projected to belong to a minority group (any group other than non-Hispanic White alone).1 Structural inequities, disparities in SDOH, and resulting health inequities will increase health care demands by racial/ethnic minorities. The study also emphasizes that health care providers are often tasked with advocating for those who may not be able to advocate for themselves, all while facing significant challenges. A May 2025 report from the World Health Organization on SDOH shows that overall health increasingly depends on factors beyond the clinical setting, such as geographic location and social disadvantages. These non-medical elements can significantly influence health outcomes, sometimes even more than genetics or access to care.2 Consequently, providers are faced with a complex group of variables when delivering holistic patient care and addressing health disparities. Overcoming the hurdles of health inequity Numerous studies emphasize the need to tackle disparities in health care access and the growing recognition of how social, economic, and environmental factors influence equitable care. The differing health outcomes among patients from diverse cultural backgrounds demonstrate these challenges in the health care system, including language barriers, cultural norms, and limited health literacy, all of which can hinder effective communication and navigation within the health care system. Some patients may also experience logistical barriers like transportation issues or struggles with housing or food insecurity, which can severely impact health and well-being. These challenges can become hurdles to achieving optimal health and vitality, but they also present opportunities for connection and empathy – which in turn builds trust and patient engagement and can drive better health outcomes. 1 Strategies for Providing Culturally Sensitive: Care To Diverse Populations. 2 Health inequities are shortening lives by decades. |
