Behavioral health and medication adherence in primary care guide

February 4, 2025

Primary care providers play a more important role than ever before in the behavioral health diagnosis and treatment of patients. Incorporating behavioral health interventions into primary care can improve treatment adherence, chronic disease management, and overall patient outcomes, while promoting the efficient delivery of whole person care in a meaningful way.

To support providers in their efforts to integrate behavioral health with primary care, Cigna Healthcare recently released a guide that explores the most common behavioral diagnoses treated in primary care and strategies to encourage medication adherence.

The guide highlights

  • The prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of behavioral health conditions in primary care, with a focus on:
    • Depression.
    • Anxiety disorders.
    • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
  • Support for behavioral health medicine that is available.
  • Behavioral health medication adherence.

Through collaborative care and education, behavioral health conditions can be successfully treated in primary care settings.
