Administrative reminders to support your practice and collaboration

October 1, 2025

We appreciate the dedication you bring to your work providing care to customers with Evernorth® (Evernorth) Behavioral Health and Cigna Healthcare® coverage. The following key administrative reminders can help support your practice and ensure smooth collaboration.

Staying aligned with administrative guidelines

A strong provider network is the foundation of great customer care. That is why we are committed to building long-term relationships with our in-network providers.

The Evernorth Behavioral Health Administrative Guidelines are part of your contract. They cover everything from referrals and case management to claims processes. These guidelines are updated at least twice a year, so we encourage you to check them regularly to stay current.

Supporting medically appropriate care

Our goal is to support medically appropriate, evidence-based care. To reinforce this commitment, Evernorth requires that staff involved in behavioral health utilization management to complete an annual attestation confirming:

  • Decisions are based solely on care appropriateness and active coverage.
  • No one is rewarded for denying coverage or services.
  • Financial incentives do not promote underutilization.

You can call the number on the back of the customer’s ID card and request to speak to an Evernorth  medical director if you have questions about a utilization management decision.

Treatment records: what to keep in mind

In states where required, Evernorth conducts annual reviews of treatment records—with patient consent—to ensure coordination between behavioral health and primary care providers.

Here are a few key reminders for maintaining treatment records:

  • Include the patient’s name and ID number on every page.
  • Store records securely and ensure they are easily retrievable.
  • Document services provided to each individual.
  • Make sure entries are legible, signed with your name and credentials, dated, and organized chronologically.
