Alternative pain management services and medications

Massachusetts House Bill 5143 includes provisions for alternative treatments for pain management. We have identified possible alternative pain management services and medications that may be covered for your patients with Cigna Healthcare® benefit plans issued in Massachusetts.

Non-medication treatment alternatives for pain

  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Interventional pain management nerve block
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Occupational therapy
  • Osteopathic manipulation medicine
  • Physical therapy
  • Physician medicine/rehabilitation
  • Spine surgery
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation unit

Non-opioid medication alternatives for pain

  • Anticonvulsants
  • Antidepressants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Skeletal muscle relaxants
  • Topical analgesics

Coverage will vary based on a patient’s Cigna Healthcare benefit plan. Benefit plan eligibility and coverage must be verified for each patient.
