Diabetes screening: Recommendations for psychiatrists

April 1, 2024

While the use of atypical anti-psychotic medications can be effective in the management of mental health disorders in adults, children, and adolescents, they also increase risk for weight gain and metabolic disorders.

Here are some clinical information and recommendations for treating patients who are prescribed these medications:

  • Atypical antipsychotic medications have become widely used due to their lower rate of extrapyramidal adverse effects when compared to older classes of medication.
  • While some of the atypical drugs are better tolerated than older classes, they increase the incidence of diabetes in individuals who are prescribed these medications.
  • The use of more than one anti-psychotic medication in an individual can increase the risk of side effects or medical complications.
  • Evernorth highly recommends metabolic screenings for customers who are prescribed atypical antipsychotic medications. Screenings should begin at the initiation of treatment and continue at least quarterly as long as an individual remains on the medication.
  • In addition, individual, group, or family therapy can be helpful in treating conditions that require the use of anti-psychotic medications. Evernorth can provide referrals to adult, child or family therapists.
